Miniature horses and miniature donkeys are for the entire family. A young child may be afraid of a standard size horse or donkey, yet that same child will hug a miniature foal and ride for hours on a miniature horse. Older people, no longer as mobile as they once were, can handle and enjoy the miniatures.

Donkeys are plain, humble creatures. There is nothing fancy about them but they are good friends and good servants to humans. Donkeys are not highly regarded by some people, and yet Jesus, the Son of God, chose to ride a donkey into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. (Matthew 21: 1-11)  What an honor it must have been for the humble donkey! Most people know that the little donkey has a cross on its back, but few people know the legend of the donkey’s cross.

The Legend of the Donkey’s Cross

The story is told that the little donkey that had been Jesus’ mount on Palm Sunday, came to the hill of Calvary, where Jesus died on the cross. Seeing the tragic event, he wished with all his heart that he had been able to carry the cross for Jesus, as he was the proper one to carry heavy loads. The donkey turned his back on the sight, but he could not leave. He wished to stay until it was all over because of his love for Jesus. In reward for the loyal and humble love of the little donkey, the Lord caused the shadow of the cross to fall across his back and shoulders. And there it has remained, a tribute to the loyalty and love of the humblest of God’s creatures.

"Happy are those who are humble, they will receive what God has promised"

(Matthew 5:5)
